Editorial | REMOURBAN - Accelerating smart urban transformation - Newsletter No.3 - November 2016 | Scoop.it

Our project’s recent assessment by the EC review team has shown that we, as a consortium, are on track and are all highly committed, co-operating across borders towards REMOURBAN’s objectives. I therefore would like to take this opportunity to publicly praise the REMOURBAN team for their ongoing work and dedication – I am confident we will be able to deliver the success that is expected from our ambitious and broad project.

Now that everything has come together and heading in the right direction, we need to turn our attention to moving towards the finer details of realistic implementation and replicability. We should focus on transitioning to real-world scenarios, ensuring technological developments and business models are fully integrated into our emerging Urban Regeneration Model.

Over recent months we have been continuing our outreach, working closely on leveraging critical mass with fellow projects to communicate to the right stakeholders and audiences, including citizens. Our collaboration also extends to Citykeys for smart city indicators and to Expresso for smart city standards. As such we have played an active role in Smart Cities projects’ meetings as well as in the EIP SCC Action Clusters. We have organised a joint presence at the Building Sustainability Conference and Exhibition in Stockholm, and actively contributed to the lively discussions at the SCIS’s Project Coordinators meeting, sharing know-how and creating recommendations for projects. Regarding future events, we are now working on our attendance at the Smart City Expo in Barcelona. This will involve a speech on the characterisation of European cities as basis for replication, as well as a stand shared with the other Lighthouse projects and the EIP SCC and in November.

In short, REMOURBAN is not a project “lost in isolation” but very much an integrated initiative which places great emphasis on clustering and co-operation for maximum impact.

Smart cities vs “locked-in” cities

Smart cities vs “locked-in” cities | REMOURBAN - Accelerating smart urban transformation - Newsletter No.3 - November 2016 | Scoop.it

One of the key issues facing modern cities today is to avoid municipalities being locked in to technology from a single provider, and to ensure they are free to transition to the most convenient products and services for citizens offered by competitors.

As more and more cities launch projects to become smart, a substantial need is emerging: the ability to share the various models across the world so that they can be replicated anywhere.

Awakening workshops 4 Smarter Cities

Awakening workshops 4 Smarter Cities | REMOURBAN - Accelerating smart urban transformation - Newsletter No.3 - November 2016 | Scoop.it

AREBS launches a series of “smart cities” workshops, which will be held by the end of 2016, dedicated to Seraing and the cities of Liege metropolis.

Beyond marketing and commercial aspects, knowing where to steer to allow a town to become more smart and sustainable can be a headache for policymakers! Nowadays, technical solutions exist. They nevertheless struggle to meet the expectations and needs of municipalities. In relation to all strategic projects in Seraing -The Master Plan, the social Master Plan, the Master Park, the Remourban project, the creative hub, etc.- these workshops aim to address and assess how smart technologies will, in the future, make cities most efficient in the management of energy and resources, more connected and more livable for citizens.
