When consulting the definition of a lighthouse, one can read, “displaying or flashing a very bright light for the guidance of ships in avoiding dangerous areas, in following certain routes”. It seems particularly appropriate to me then, that REMOURBAN is a “lighthouse” project. Here to give guidance, to light up the routes to follow in achieving a REgeneration MOdel for accelerating smart URBAN transformation.

Reaching desirable climate change scenarios is not possible with our current building stock and behaviours. Following the current trend, buildings will be responsible for all the global emissions that the +2°C increase scenario allows. Also, cities across Europe face similar mobility problems related to congestion, road safety, security or pollution, which increase constantly having a very negative impact on citizens’ health. We need bankable and replicable solutions supported by credible and reliable evaluation to ensure cities can make ‘smart’ a reality. By combining actions in ICT, energy and mobility, REMOURBAN is striving to be a driver of change, source of experience and provider of solutions to three lighthouse cities, two follower cities and the world beyond.

No surprise then, that the first six months has already seen a remarkable amount of work and collaboration. We have set the basis for the project innovations and the evaluation framework; completed the lighthouse “city audits”; and established an ambitious dissemination and communications framework at project and local level. (On that note, be sure to stay connected and engaged with us online and on Twitter of course!)

Our meeting in Nottingham allowed us to move a considerable amount of work forward to cap a full-speed first year for the project at the end of 2015. Technical innovations in our three pillars – energy, ICT and mobility – are at the fore; but also citizen engagement strategies, city audits in our follower cities, characterisation of European Cities as basis for replication and much more.

Finally, REMOURBAN is also proud to be fully aligned with the European Smart Cities strategy and part of a vibrant network of projects related to initiatives of urban renovation. I am pleased to say that cooperation with our sister projects Grow Smarter and Triangulum is already taking place and I invite you to monitor their excellent projects closely. Also see our events pages to find out more on the Urban Futures event, 25-26 November, 2015 in Berlin, Germany that will take our collaboration further and tighten coordination with the horizontal EU Smart Cities Information System and City Keys initiatives.

In a complex world facing complex challenges, we need a lighthouse to guide us more than ever. I hope you will continue to look out for REMOURBAN and find some invaluable guidance as a result of our work. Stay in touch!
