Welcome to the 7th edition of the R2CITIES newsletter

R2CITIES has started its final phase. In November, the Genoa demo site team held its final conference as part of the Genoa Smart Week. The conference looked at the outcomes and achievements of the retrofitting which was carried out in Genoa’s Lavatrici district, and included a training workshop on designing renovation projects for residential districts. We are proud to report that 89% of the residents there are satisfied with the project and 82% have experienced improvements. The final conferences for the Kartal and Valladolid demo sites are set to take place in late spring.

During EUSEW 2017, our project experts delivered two webinars about avoiding the pitfalls of residential district retrofitting. You can view them on the R2CITIES web site. And as the project nears its end, other interesting material, results and guides will be made available.

I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year,

Cecilia Sanz Montalvillo

Member of the Coordination Team

The “washing machines” district smartens up to halve energy consumption | R2Cities_newsletter 7 | Scoop.it

A peripheral district in Genoa, Italy, has become a smart city lab. The project has improved apartment conditions, reduced waste and lowered the energy bill, all with the help of citizens.

Less than three years ago, the so called “Lavatrici” district in Genoa (literally, “washing machines” in Italian) was in poor shape: infiltration, heat dispersion, energy waste. The residents longed for an intervention.

Many pitfalls lie in wait for the unwitting district renovator. Not only is it crucial to be cost-effective and environmentally sustainable, but you have to involve stakeholders and take on board social aspects too. Many variables. Many wrong turns possible.

You therefore need to plan carefully and then adjust your heading throughout the project. Getting your design methodology right and managing your data are therefore key to successful retrofitting.

Solar energy: “googling” your roof

Solar energy: “googling” your roof | R2Cities_newsletter 7 | Scoop.it

Internet users can assess the solar potential of their roofs through a platform developed by Google. The online “calculator”, which was only accessible in the US, has now reached Europe, starting in Germany.

Despite increasing talk about renewable energy, many people remain far removed from what’s going on. To tackle this, various projects have been developed over the years helping users to better understand and use green energy sources.
