Welcome to the 6th edition of the R2CITIES newsletter

Today R2CITIES is on track towards its final year. At the Valladolid demo site, works have now started and are due to be completed by mid-2017, and the Kartal demo site is progressing with its three buildings. Genoa has been active in engaging with local residents and housing associations, and now the focus is on monitoring since all the planned interventions have been accomplished.

In late November, our exploitation partner Steinbeis hosted our sixth periodic meeting in Stuttgart, Germany. The event included sessions on the design methodology for district renovation, the monitoring platforms and exploitation. This latter session consisted of a joint exercise to select priority exploitation results from a consolidated list of 13 results areas of the project. Now as we go further into 2017, exploitation teams are being set up to flesh out detailed business plans per exploitation result, and we’re looking ahead to completing the works where necessary and then following through on the monitoring.

Kind regards,

Cecilia Sanz Montalvillo

Member of the Coordination Team

Tackling the ethical challenges of big data

Tackling the ethical challenges of big data | R2Cities Newsletter 6 - April 2017 | Scoop.it

An authority on social data, Susan Etlinger argues we need to apply critical thinking and exercise caution as we enter the age of “data ubiquity”.

The coming tech disruptions and revolutions have at times been predicted to fix all manner of societal and environmental ills, so at first glance Susan Etlinger’s warning to exercise caution and restraint can seem odd. But while data may be propelling advances in many fields, caution and critical engagementwith the information we collect is essential if we are to avoid error and protect our privacy, Etlinger warns.
